Notice from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland

Notice from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland

If you’re not happy with the standard of hygiene in a food business, you find that food isn’t fit to eat, or you are unhappy with a food label, you should make a complaint – either to the food business, or to the FSAI.  This includes situations where you feel a food contains an allergen that was not listed in the list of ingredients or on the label. You should be aware that it is not necessary to include a ‘contains…’ box on the label. The law requires that the allergens should be clearly indicated on the label and if it is clear from the list of ingredients that the allergen is present then that is sufficient. You may also notice statements like ‘Made in a factory where nuts are handled’ on the label of a food that does not itself contain nuts. The use of this sort of statement is discouraged by the FSAI, as manufacturers should endeavour to have good manufacturing practices in place that prevent the cross-contamination of non-allergen containing products by allergen containing products.  However, the use of this type of statement is not illegal.

To make a complaint to the FSAI you can:

Complaints about food businesses or products will be investigated by inspectors working on our behalf.  In order to investigate your complaint, we will ask you for your name and contact details so that the inspector can reach you if they need more information, and so that they can give you feedback on the investigation.  Your name and contact details will not be given to the food business.

If you are making a complaint about a food, it helps if you provide us with as much information as possible.  For example, where you bought the food, the manufacturer’s name and address, the best-before or use- by date and the batch code.

Information for Schools

Information for Schools

As more and more children/young people are being diagnosed with a chronic health condition such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and anaphylaxis, teachers are faced with the challenge of supporting a student with these conditions in school. This can seem like a great responsibility and one teachers, principals, school staff and parents can be anxious about.

To address this need, the Asthma Society of Ireland, Diabetes Federation of Ireland, Brainwave – the Irish Epilepsy Association and Anaphylaxis Ireland came together to produce a resource pack ‘Managing Chronic Health Conditions at School’ to help teachers and parents to work together and provide a safe and enjoyable school environment for students with any one of these conditions.

This pack is a toolkit containing:

  • Information on developing or updating your school’s guidelines on managing students with chronic health conditions
  • Standardised Healthcare Plan and template forms/letters that can be adapted to meet your school’s information need for each student with a chronic condition
  • Clear outline of parents, teachers and board of management  responsibilities to aid communication and expectations of all parties in managing a student with a chronic condition on a daily basis
  • Practical information including an Emergency Plan on each condition for teachers and guidance on safe storage and safe disposal of medications at school

The resource pack and DVD’s were developed to support and enable teachers and parents to work together to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for students with a chronic condition as they go through school. Every school in Ireland will receive this resource pack in September 2011 and it is also available to download Managing Chronic Health Conditions at School or an Irish Version Ag Bainistiú Riochtaí Sláinte Ainsealacha ar Scoil.
